Bonnie Crombie Commits to Fixing Doug Ford’s Housing Disaster Through Sweeping Reforms
December 11, 2024 | Today, Bonnie Crombie, Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, announced More Homes You Can Afford, a plan to make buying or renting a home more affordable. These measures will help young people buy their first home, seniors downsize, and drive economic prosperity; all while tackling Doug Ford’s housing disaster head-on by:
- Eliminating the provincial Land Transfer Tax for first-time homebuyers, seniors downsizing, and non-profit home builders—saving families and seniors on average $13,500 off the cost of a new home.
- Scrapping Development Charges on new middle-class housing, which can add up to $170,000 on the price of a new home, and replacing them with the Better Communities Fund to ensure that the province invests in and benefits from sustainable municipal growth.
- Making renting more affordable by introducing fair, phased-in rent control similar to Manitoba, resolving Landlord-Tenant Board disputes within two months, and establishing the Rental Emergency Support for Tenants (REST) Fund to help vulnerable renters avoid eviction during financial emergencies.
The More Homes You Can Afford plan will save real people up to $170,000 on the cost of a new home, make rent more affordable, and get more homes and communities built by cutting the taxes that are making homes more expensive.
“Doug Ford just doesn’t care about getting you a home you can afford. He’s had six years to fix this disaster, and things have only gotten worse. Doug Ford has failed to build the new homes Ontario needs. Rents have skyrocketed, home ownership is further out of reach, and seniors can’t even afford to downsize in their own communities. It’s time for a government that delivers more for you. As Premier, I’ll cut your taxes, build homes you can afford, tackle surging rents, and restore the basic promise that if you work hard, you will be able to afford a home in your community.”
– Bonnie Crombie, Leader of Ontario’s Liberals
“The Ontario Liberal’s affordable housing plan contains practical measures to help prospective homeowners and existing or prospective renters better afford market and non-market housing. These measures will help millions of Ontarians who are in or are at risk of being in a state of housing precarity. Our plan positions Ontario to take the right to housing seriously, and to be a leader in ensuring that every citizen has a place they can call home.”
– Rob Rainer, Ontario Liberal Candidate for Lanark–Frontenac–Kingston
